We visited Angor Wat in 2001. It had recently been opened to the public and was virtually empty, save groups of monks, their colorful robes blowing in the wind.

There were no rules, no guards, no cordoned off areas. . .In fact, our guide Bug encouraged us to scale the temple walls and enjoy the views from above. When we booked the trip, I remember thinking that, in ten years, this place will be totally changed. Wow, was I right.

Though you will confront large selfie stick wielding crowds if you go today, it is still an incredible spot to experience.
